The World's 'Me-Too' Chorus!

The World's 'Me-Too' Chorus!

'Me-Too' flies worldwide! Obviously, the causes that led to the 'Me-Too' chorus are across the world. But they remained under wraps. Till now. So all those folk around the world - the prime movers who unintentionally (and shamelessly?) unwrapped the wraps - deserve tremendous credit. International award! Maybe something like a Nobel...for, unintentionally, benefiting all mankind!
And now with 'Me-Too' going round the globe, wouldn't it be interesting to crown a world champion? From all those across the big wide world who show no signs of shame though more 'Me-Too' fingers are pointed at them? However, since it's not a sport, it cannot be included in the Olympics. So how do we go about selecting a world champ? Say, every four years.
Fairly. Honorably.
Big issue! Big question!
Think hard and see if you get a bright idea. Who knows, this may be your best chance...to fame!

The Times and I - (Part 3)

The Times and I - (Part 3)

In my third year in medical college I went home to Bombay for holidays and saw a Times of India ad inviting applications for training in journalism. By then the original British publisher of Times Group  had been bought over by a major Indian company. For fun, I applied. I sent in cuttings of articles and stories I had published in newspapers and magazines (one of the diversionary tactics I was busy with in medical college), including Times Group publications. I was called for an interview. The business head of the company did not ask me any questions. He just said I was selected. I told him I was in the third year of medical college and had applied hoping I could have a weekly column in the Times. He said he was not authorized to do that, but I could join as a trainee next day. I thanked him and walked out of a professional journalist's career.

The Times and I - (Part 2)

The Times and I - (Part 2)

Later, however, my contacts with the Times continued. My father wanted me become a doctor. He felt that was the best way I could help the family. Those days the middle class choices of career were medicine, engineering or, at worst, law. I had no such interest. I was busy through junior college and medical college in a rare variety of diversionary tactics (more on that later), which included writing freelance humor and short stories. They were published in Times of India, Indian Express, Midday, Femina, Shankar's Weekly, Thought etc.
One of the Times Editors, the one who wrote a humorous third editorial, M. V. M., became a friend. I would drop in on him whenever I went from medical college to Bombay for holidays. Depending on when I met him, we would go to the 1st floor of the VT Station for lunch or to the Excelsior Cinema's open air restaurant for coffee - and discus the latest  scientific discoveries or writing.

The Times and I - (Part 1)

The Times and I - (Part 1)

My visits to The Times of India began when I was a school-kid. In those days it was no problem for a youngster to travel from Dadar to Fort, the main business area of Bombay, by a slow-coach tram or a 'local' suburban train of either the Great Indian Peninsular (G.I.P.) or the Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway (B.B. and C. I.). Later, as the population of Bombay and suburbs multiplied, getting in or out of a suburban train became a matter of expertise.
My father had enrolled me as a member of the Petit Library in town when I was eight.
Opposite the G.I.P's Victoria Terminus (V.T.) on the main thoroughfare of town were Times Group's offices. At V.T. I would cross the street and go to the ground floor Stores of the Times Group, which was run by one of my father's best friends. I was sure to get a pastry or an ice-cream if I visited him, before heading for the library.
But my first visit to the Times Group editorial offices came after I submitted a poem to the Illustrated Weekly. At that time the Times was still a British newspaper run by Bennet, Coleman and Co.  I got a letter asking me to call at the office of the Weekly Editor C. R. Mandy, an Irishman. He was surprised to see a school kid. He said he liked the refrain repeated at each verse's end: But she was a goddess on a pedestal! He said he couldn't publish the poem, but he wanted to see more work by me.

That ended my poetic career. I don't think I ever wrote a poem again.

Jagjit's India Novel: Dreams of One Country: A Key Clarification

Jagjit's India Novel: Dreams of One Country: A Key Clarification

Dreams of One Country: Novel: United States of India Rises! Set in the midst of historic events, it
is the story of a young woman's noble campaign that launches India's ascent... to join the world's elite developed nations!
This clarification is meant to make an internet search for the book easier. Type in Jagjit's Dreams of One Country - and you'll get it. It's the only novel or book by that exact name. Penned by my wife and me, it's available on Amazon as an e-book or paperback. You see it in two different covers. The red-covered book is the one that is downloaded as an e-book. The original one has a picture on it and that's the one home-delivered as a paperback. But it's the same book.
All rights - like translation, print publishing, movie etc. - remain with me as co-author.

A Letter to Mo (or Maureen)  - Part 3
(In parts, my light-hearted story published in The Illustrated Weekly of India on September 7, 1969)

(Dear Mo,)
Let me ask you whats the use of being ejucated if you cant understand that here Im fitter making more money than any silly (eccept you) clerk. And in this finest formerly English company of Bombay, where Im sure Pathan wont let new bofreind in through the door even. I strongly hope he is not Andrade. Because if he is Im waiting to catch him and give him one on the nose not perticulally because of taking you away but from 10 Nov 1968 he is owing me Rs 30 borrowed at Mahalaxmi races. Could be Jos? Then he must not have told his job is temprary.
And just by the way if you and new boyfriend want to go for evening walk hope you know the way. Go strate on Churchgate street not stopping ofcorse when you reach M Drive and soon you both will be right in where you belong. In the blue Arabien sea with the other fishes.
Since in any way it is all over dear Maureen I want to wish you all best in the world and that we had good times together which I hope you will at sometimes remembre, as I will and extra specialy that night on Malbar hill when I sang Dark Moon and as you said exackly like Tony Brent.

(In parts, my light-hearted story published in The Illustrated Weekly of India on September 7, 1969)

(Dear Mo,)
And mensioninng skirts and things I am remembring now the oh so peculyar sting. S-T-I-N-G in capital. Though ofcorse with my nose close with cold often I never used to bother much about sad fact. And havent mensioned before being as I said a gent hoping not to hurt your feelings, which now Im sure you do not have any the way you behave with me. (So oh God I say Im lucky to escape from a girl like that!!!)
You say in your letter and proudly like that this new boyfreind of your is like you S.S.C. pass and a clerk. One thing great about me is if something good happens to a girl who is or was a girlfreind of mine I always usaly feel happy. Just from my pure goodness of heart. But this about the new boyfriend Im sorry. Youre making a big mistake and Im sure you will regret. He is ejucated all right but most only thing he is superior is may be his spelings are more correck than mine. So be careful. Spelings dont make a good man I say.
Kindly also forgive me for not enough comas in my letter. Comas are like my left hand. I cant use them. Any way not to worry your pretty head. You can tell new clerk boyfreind put them in.    (To be continued...)

(In parts, my humorous story published in The Illustrated Weekly of India on September 7, 1969)

Dear Mo.
Thank you for kind messej saying I am off and not your lover boy any more.
What you expect? That I will borrow gun from friend D'Souza and bang bang shoot my head all because of great love for you? Youre mistaken. Ofcorse. Because I'm not like chap Romio whom I read off only the other night in classics comics. I dont care.
Any way no use telling you about Romio because you think you are ejucated like (having done matric and know everything) and never read fine classics comics. But this I must mension youre not any Juliet. (Girl in above story).
You must be imagninng me sad and gloomy and like hell lonely my pillows wet with crying and what not, only youre so mistaken I laugh imagninng you imagninng. Ha ha ha to give you sample. You must know that I every time I go for haircut change my girlfriend. This being my own frase meaning how often. But I mean it and also not just Goan girls but also Anglos
Only Im really astonish like about you. Really. Knowing it seems you change boyfriend  every time you change skirt or something. (Notice how I never said brass etc. being a gent.)

For the Lucky Who Own a Drook!

For the Lucky Who Own a Drook!

The Drook
(Shortened version of my light article published in The Times of India of August 5, 1962)
In the West, they say, not a day passes without its quota of inventions designed to make life happier for everyone - especially the manufacturers and lawyers engaged in associated lawsuits. Some of these arrive here to make our life happier....and, simultaneously too, their repair companies. These are the people who make me uneasy. Avoid them with some of that grand do-it-yourself spirit which is so widespread in the United States.
Now if you are one of those lucky people (like me) who own a drook here's how you can confound the repair men. Invest in some books on drooks. In particular Psychology and the Drook will help you in those tense moments when your one great desire is to kick your drook squarely in the procket. Keep a large-sized repair kit ready, especially spanners and a heavy hammer.
When your drook makes a gurgling sound and stops working, use the spanners to tighten the nuts. If that doesn't work tap the nuts with the spanners. Go on...with increasing force and frenzy. If in that process your drook roars into action thank your lucky stars. If that doesn't work sweat it out and hit the nuts with bigger and bigger spanners. And, finally, try a few injudicious swipes with your heavy hammer.
If even that fails you have only one option to avoid the repair-men. Call in the breakdown people and haul your drook to the nearest cliff. And push...so that  it hurtles down. At the cliff's bottom you will salvage enough metal to make yourself a nice little wad of currency. Aren't you lucky?
Then with a little assistance from the bank balance you can buy yourself a new drook, maybe a smaller one. Oh, what a wonderful reward for your labors!

Asia's Singapore Vision: A Truly Modern India

Asia's Singapore Vision: A Truly Modern India

Can the Singapore Vision work for other Asian countries?
Certainly! Fair laws fully implemented will help countries break away from the self-defeating vicious cycle of corruption, bribery etc. even in elections that can impede the progress of any underdeveloped country. Fair laws fully implemented will help establish among the people unity despite diversity.
Of course, the changes will have to come on a much larger scale than in Singapore.

Why Asia Snails in Development

Why Asia Snails in Development

In the last 75 years - since the end of colonialism - how many Asian countries have joined the world's developed nations?
Singapore, certainly! The 4th most progressive place in the world, one ahead of the U.S. - which is ranked 5th. All due to the foresight and wisdom of Lee Kuan Yew. He strictly enforced laws to ensure people of different ethnic origins and faiths (Chinese, Malays, Indians etc.) without discrimination, lived in peace and contributed to the progress and prosperity of the city-state. The laws even cover hygiene in public places. And, for any misuse, the un-bribable Singapore police can mete out instant punishment with a cane.
Multi-storied buildings and international companies opening outlets to add to their profits don't make a developed nation. What's required is a transformation in attitudes of the country, so that the people learn to unite, to share and care for each other, to contribute to building an exemplary country.
In Denmark, which tops the list of developed countries, taxes are high. But all education and medical care are free for every citizen.

Back to Blogging!

Back to Blogging!

Returning to blogging after a break. I had problems with my old laptop. Finally, I got a new laptop. I would like to give you an idea of the kind of topics I'll be blogging on.
1. Lifetime experiences - both sad and happy; some showing how easy it is to hurt dear ones without even realizing it.
2. Shortened articles, humor, stories etc. published earlier in Indian newspapers and magazines like The Illustrated Weekly, Times of India. Some go back to the 1960s. By sheer chance my son found the missing 'cuttings' file during our recent 10-day trip to India.
3. Thoughts on World events.

Wind Day Tune - in Oregon

There's music in the wind
And the trees are dancing
To one of the myriad tunes
That nature plays.
I'm leaving this place now.
But I hope to come back,
Come back here

Need to Question Superstitions!

Many of us acquire some superstitions from older people in our childhood. Superstitions are passed on from generation to generation, no questions asked. But superstitions crumble if they are questioned using scientific knowledge. Perhaps 'An apple a day keeps the doctor away,' was long ago an accepted superstition. Today, no one believes an apple a day is the perfect prescription to avoid falling ill!
Superstitious beliefs survive when we either don't care or don't dare to question them!

On Learning Major Life Lessons!

On Learning Major Life Lessons!

I have realized too late that many important lessons in life on my words or deeds that hurt or hindered someone, even my nearest and dearest, were realized too late for me to make any amends or difference. Had I realized them in time I could surely have mended bridges and, yes, spread and received more happiness.
I hope my admission will help others: to check out if they have unlearnt lessons.

Love Unlimited!

I don't remember ever yelling at anyone in the family. Or, for that matter, anyone else. (But I may have...and forgotten it.) At present I'm with my son and family in north-western U.S. A few days ago I said something that annoyed him...that I would like to go back and stay alone in India for some time. He started screaming at the top of his voice: 'Rubbish! Utter rubbish! You think you're growing any younger?' Etcetera, etctcetera! I was silenced, stunned! He walked off. But within minutes he came back in tears. Sobbing, he hugged me, saying, 'Sorry, Popo! I lost my cool.' 'Yeah, son, it's one of the lessons we've got to learn in life. Never to lose one's cool.' He has called me by many names. And the latest is Popo.

Later I thought of all the love I have received in my life. And I realized it was unlimited.
From my parents it was Love Unlimited!
From my beautiful and gentle wife it was Love Unlimited, a love that bound north and south of the country, transcending all the traditional divisions that disunite people. (Though I had lived my early life in Bombay, my parents were from the southernmost state.)
And from my children who moved to the U.S. too, it's always Love Unlimited!

Wonderful Dog Tale: In Memoriam - 3

Read Ms. Jagjit's novel Dreams of One Country (Amazon): A never-before love inspired campaign lights India's dawn as an elite modern nation!

Wonderful Dog Tale: In Memoriam - 3

Dixie and I aged together in the house. I could see he was developing cataract in his eyes. Apart from that he showed no signs of ill-health. One morning he was lying near the dining table. And he hadn't go out to piddle. Two or three times I told him: 'Dixie, come on. Get out!' He didn't budge. Then I prodded his neck with my toe. The third time I did that he got up and started walking slowly. I opened the door. He went down the two steps. He lay across the entrance...and died.
I buried him behind the house. He was a black dog. The tree I planted over him drops fragrant white flowers
on his grave.
