My Top Favourite Hindi Singer: Mukesh

My Top Favourite Hindi Singer: Mukesh

He was my favourite because he often sang sentimental songs. He did not have a roof-lifting voice range like Rafi. But he conveyed emotions. In 1957 I heard him live at Rang Bhavan, the open-air auditorium adjacent to St. Xavier's College, Bombay.  It was a wonderful experience!

One Of My Favorite English Hit Songs!

One Of My  Favorite English Hit Songs!

An all-time favorite is "Begin the Beguine." The song was composed by Cole Porter. during a 1935 Pacific cruise aboard Cunard's ocean liner Franconia. In October 1935, it was introduced by June Knight in the Broadway musical Jubilee, Later, the orchestral version was conducted by Artie Shaw

At first, the song gained little popularity, perhaps because of its unconventional form. Josephine Baker danced to it in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1936. Two years later band leader Artie Shaw recorded a swing orchestra version of the song..

Top Favourite Hindi Hit Song!

                                                 Top Favourite Hindi Hit Song!

Awaaz De Kahaan Hai! 1946. That's my all-time favourite Hindi song. It's from the 1946 movie Anmol Ghadi.  I was a school kid at Antonio D'Silva, Dadar West, Bombay then...The song was sung by Noor Jehan and Surendra. And the Music Director was Naushad.
Incidentally, my family lived those days on Dadar Main Road. And that road was Bollywood then, with three film studios on it: Ranjit, Shree Sound and Ranjit Movietone.

I'll go into more details about Bombay's old Bollywood in another blog

Memories Meet History On U.K. Queen's Jubilee

Memories Meet History On U.K. Queen's Jubilee

Seventy years ago Princess Elizabeth was on a trip to East Africa, then a British colony. My wife-to-be was a schoolgirl there. Her father had gone from India and worked for the East African Railways. She and her school-mates were excited as the Princess would be visiting their school  But, suddenly, plans were changed due to the death of the Princess's father, King George VI. The girls were disappointed, as the Princess would return to England without visiting their school. And on February 6, 1952, at the age of 25, the Princess was crowned Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey. Seventy years have now gone by. This is the Platinum Jubilee year of her coronation, and celebrations are going on in England.
