In college in India my daughter had a classmate who lived on a farm. He distributed pups born on the farm to students. My daughter brought home one, whom I named Dixie. She looked after Dixie till she graduated. Then she did SAT and GRE and got a full scholarship to Purdue University in the U.S. Several years later she returned for a holiday. Dixie was lying near the dining table down the hall. But the moment she entered the house he ran to the door and kept jumping on her as though he had gone crazy. In joy unlimited! It was a wonderful scene to watch. From his scent memory of years ago he still remembered the one who had taken care of him as a pup!

How A Relatively Peaceful World Simmers! 

 

In a relatively peaceful world, with no major good versus bad wars like World War Two going on (probably the best condition we can hope for), why do countries - however developed or undeveloped - tend to follow policies that are self-centered and selfish, ignoring the larger issues of humanity?

LAW AND DISORDER!

At that time India's Supreme Court had ordered that, based on the results of the Common Entrance Test for entrance to medical and engineering colleges conducted by any state, 30% of the seats be reserved for students from other Indian states. My daughter appeared for the test in the state where we were living after moving from Bombay. She came in the top 300 and was eligible for a seat. However, at seat allocation we were told she had done her undergrad in another state and therefore would not get a seat. They were directly flouting a Supreme Court order. So she went for the CET in another state. Again she did well. And again that state refused her a seat. After that she decided she did not want to join medical college. She would graduate and then seek admission in an American university.
She did just that and did so well in her GRE, TOEFL and SAT that she got admission with a full scholarship in Purdue Uinversity, Indiana.
The big questions are:
How could those Indian universities get away ignoring the highest court in the land?
Where is a country headed if authorities can get away with flouting the highest court's orders?

Memories of Victory Day

I was a kid then. We lived on the third floor of a 5-storey building in Dadar, Bombay, with seven tenants on each floor. As usual, if my father hadn't returned from his job in Ballard Estate by eight, I would start worrying and be out on the common veranda, waiting to see him turn the corner after getting off the suburban train.
On the evening of May 8, 1945 I was waiting in the verandah when jeep-loads of British soldiers arrived and went into the Dadar Bar on the opposite side. They came out singing and yelling, some with bottles in their hands. They did a jig on the street yelling 'Victory!', 'We've won!' 'War's over!' etcetera. When he arrived my Dad told me that the Germans had accepted defeat and surrendered. The end of World War 2 in Europe! A great victory for good over evil!
Indian troops had fought in the war around the world. But the response among Indians to the victory was muted. They were waiting for a victory more meaningful to them. Freedom from British rule!

(Acci)Dentally Yours (or How Dentistritis Can Leave You Toothless!)

So you have a painful decaying tooth. You go to a professional to deal with the problem. The professional pulls out the bad tooth. For cosmetic and other reasons the professional advises you to go for a cap to cover the empty space. You agree. The professional cuts the two good teeth on either side of the space and tapers them...in order to fit the cap. So now you look smart with a gold or silver cap shining in your smile.
In course of time mouth and food liquids enter the cap and the two cut teeth get infected and disintegrate. So the professional pulls them out. Now you have a three-tooth space that needs capping.
And you keep consulting the professional and that process goes on. Yes...till you have no more teeth to cap. So the professional equips you with dentures. 
And then...having hit the jackpot as far as your dental care is concerned, the professional has no more interest in you. The party is over!
So what do you do?
Nothing. Just keep your dentures clean.
So sorry!
