Covid-19's Wake-Up Call For Mankind!

  Covid-19's Wake-Up Call For Mankind!

Does the Covid 19 virus carry a message for all mankind? Is it saying: I have traveled around the world without discriminating, crossing all barriers both natural and man-made, wreaking havoc. I have done it to drive home a vital message for humanity. Listen to me, peoples of the world!
Whatever I, the virus you call Covid 19, is doing is meant to emphasize a lesson you haven't learnt despite thousands of years of history and fantastic advances in knowledge, science, exploration. Stop wasting your precious time and energy to promote malice or deceit. Stop dividing peoples for selfish short-term gains. Stop pettiness and heartlessness. Learn, learn that this world is one. All humanity is one. Don't discriminate against each other on the basis of climate-caused differences in appearances, or differences in faith, beliefs, languages, attire etc. This world belongs to all humanity. Unite! Strive in peace, countries helping each other to develop and progress. To build a better world for all mankind!*

'Down With The Viva!': Revisiting Published Humor - 1'

'Down With The Viva!': Revisiting Published Humor - 1

(Excerpted\from my article published in the Sunday Times of India, 1st July, 1962)
I have an antipathy for any viva voces which go beyond pleasant preliminaries like "How do you do?" and "What is your name?"
What about medical college vivas where they ask all kinds of technical questions? That was what I was in for when my father decided, without any referendum worth the name, that I had what it took to be a doctor. Well, I'll admit I did not always get cold feet at the mere thought of a viva. All that began from my encounter with a sarcastic professor of physiology.
There is a friend of mine who, ever since he developed a faint mistiness above the upper lip has been betting on horses. He has told me about the sinister tendency of any horse on which he has bet his 'all' to bolt in the general direction of the stables shortly before the race starts, presumably on a mission like warning Son of Genghis Khan to keep his dirty paws off Sweet Bathsheba while he - Handsome Cavalier - was away at the races. True it is that I developed a similar tendency to bolt off at a tangent  and introduce into the discussion more worldly matters. In my case the escapism started from my first viva with a sarcastic physiology professor, a loud-mouthed character, who threatened to clout me on the head if I was nervous. My teeth chattered. He told me to stop it because the room was shaking too much. His first question was about liver functions. I told him I had a pen-friend in Liverpool. And my diversionary answers to three more questions infuriated him more. He asked a "last chance" question: "Tell me the effects of raised venous pressure." I answered: "Venus de Milo...Venus, the planet. Sir, man will soon be walking on the plains of Venus." He wished I was there and added, "Young man, what you know of physiology is not worth knowing. Out!" There ended my first medical viva.
All I wish to add here is that the professor's premature retirement had nothing to do with me.

Flying (Saucers And) Teacups!: Revisiting Old Humor...1

Flying (Saucers And) Teacups!: Revisiting Old Humor - 1

I wanted to blog abridged versions of humor I had published in the news media, starting with an edit page 'middle' in The Times of India some time in the 1960s titled Flying Teacups Over Gironde! That article was actually written in response to news reports of the sighting of flying saucers from different parts of the world. I felt those were either people mis-sighting planes, rockets etc. or publicity stunts. In light hearted response I wrote an imaginary news report of people sighting teacups (with handles) flying over an area of France called Gironde.
However, I couldn't find that article among my cuttings. So I plan to continue this blog series with my other media published humor.

Mature Leaders Unite People, Immature Divide!

Mature Leaders Unite People, Immature Divide!
Yes! For their own benefit, the immature try to turn people against each other. They try to corrupt the countries top down. They try to rise on self-praise and bake their own news. At the cost of the country they take steps, even seek to pass laws, making a mockery of democracy. In due course they also tend to prove incompetent. They retard progress and development of their peoples and countries. Not that they care! In selfish pursuit of success they arouse Meanness among their supporters and disunite the country, turning sections of people against each other. Arousing the worst instincts does incalculable harm to the future and progress of their own countries.
In contrast mature leaders unite peoples. They focus on everyone striving together and contributing to the progress of their countries. And, even, other parts of the world!

Does Covid-19 Ask: Can Your World Be Truly Civilized?

Does Covid-19 Ask: Can Your World Be Truly Civilized?

Does Coronavirus also say:
In 2020 I have crossed every border on earth, both natural and man-made.
My message is: This is one world! Humanity Unite...To Solve Your Problems!
But despite all man's advances in science and technology...
Despite claiming to be followers of the noble souls who walked this earth...whose essential message for all humanity is Do Unto Others As You Would Have Others Do Unto You...
And, routinely, you go through all symbolic steps to honor those noble souls...
It's meaningless if man still discriminates against man for reasons like creed, country, skin color etc.!
Indeed, how then can your world claim to be truly civilized?

Self-Praising, Self-Serving Immature Leaders!

Self-Praising, Self-Serving Immature Leaders!

Comical indeed! Self-praise and untruths projected as noble truths. Easy route to self-promotion!
No principles. No heart-felt feeling for others. No differentiating right and wrong.
World over, that's what the immature revel in. Surely, not to serve people or their countries!
They float fiction as fact, spreading untruths against mature leaders.
They take credit for imaginary successes with self-praising stunts.
They take credit for real successes they have nothing to do with.
And they blame others for their own failures and blunders.
Since they promote utterly selfish interests, they can degrade any country's future.

Excerpt from Dreams Of One Country

Excerpt from Dreams Of One Country
This blog is the closing paragraphs of Dreams Of One Country, the novel written by my wife Jagjit and me. The excerpt is mainly a speech by Nalini, the daughter of Priya Jha who, some thirty years earlier, had inspired a great youth campaign to lead India's ascent to the world's elite developed nations.
'Friends, today we are taking the first step on the highway to the country my mother dreamt of. The way will be long. The way will be hard. But when our hearts join no mountain can stop us. From today Ek Desh youth will go from the snows of the north to the seas of Kanyakumari. And they will tell the people we are one. One family! One Bharat! One family of Bharatvaasis!’  She turned to look for a moment at Priya’s portrait before concluding: ‘Yes! One country! One people!
‘Ek Desh! Ek Desh!’ echoed the audience.
Jai Hind!’ Nalini’s voice pitched higher: ‘Jai Hind!’
The response rose: ‘Jai Hind!’ Tides of ‘Ek Desh zindabad!’ swept through the expanse of people and finally ebbed away.
She said softly: Ab chalo. Let us begin our journey. We must build a great nation.’
Everyone stood. The applause went wild. Overwhelmed, certain that a new page of one of the few meaningful causes in the world had been written, Norman hugged Davinder and the rest of the family.
‘My little one is no less than her mother,’ said Radheshyam. The proud grandfather’s eyes streamed freely.
‘Yes. Same nobility,’ whispered Norman. Then he knew what was coming. He clasped his hands together tightly and could not breathe. He felt it was blowing cold, cold...a squall from his forever winter. Norman shivered to the bone, missing Priya intensely.
*
Ek Desh breathed hope across a land anaesthetized by centuries of uncaring and injustice. A bewildered people - over a billion strong - awakened to dream of Priya Jha’s One Country. They dreamt of a gentler land, where people come together for the good of all. But that was just a dawning. Ahead lay the war to find a nation’s soul. A quiet, vast and unique war. Its battles would be fought in the heart of every Indian.'
