The World's Greatest Recycler!

The World's Greatest Recycler!

We all feel that the business of recycling waste materials for re-use is a modern development. Guess who's the world's greatest recycler? Which country? Or which company?
Guess again!
The answer is: For aeons NATURE has been recycling everything on earth. And that has made it possible for life to flourish!

Thinking of All I Must Do...And Frost!

Thinking of All I Must Do...And Frost!

Thinking of all that I have planned to do and must reminds me of a verse in Robert Frost's poem Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.
It goes:

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Memories of Victory Day

Memories of Victory Day

I was a kid then. We lived on the third floor of a 5-storey building in Dadar, Bombay, with seven tenants on each floor. As usual, if my father hadn't returned from his job in Ballard Estate by eight, I would start worrying and be out on the common veranda, waiting to see him turn the corner after getting off the suburban train.
On the evening of May 8, 1945 I was waiting in the verandah when jeep-loads of British soldiers arrived and went into the Dadar Bar on the opposite side. They came out singing and yelling, some with bottles in their hands. They did a jig on the street yelling 'Victory!', 'We've won!' 'War's over!' etcetera. When he arrived my Dad told me that the Germans had accepted defeat and surrendered. The end of World War 2 in Europe! A great victory for good over evil!
Indian troops had fought in the war around the world. But the response among Indians to the victory was muted. They were waiting for a victory more meaningful to them. Freedom from British rule!

(Acci)Dentally Yours (or How Dentistritis Can Leave You Toothless!)

(Acci)Dentally Yours (or How Dentistritis Can Leave You Toothless!)

So you have a painful decaying tooth. You go to a professional to deal with the problem. The professional pulls out the bad tooth. For cosmetic and other reasons the professional advises you to go for a cap to cover the empty space. You agree. The professional cuts the two good teeth on either side of the space and tapers them...in order to fit the cap. So now you look smart with a gold or silver cap shining in your smile.
In course of time mouth and food liquids enter the cap and the two cut teeth get infected and disintegrate. So the professional pulls them out. Now you have a three-tooth space that needs capping.
And you keep consulting the professional and that process goes on. Yes...till you have no more teeth to cap. So the professional equips you with dentures.
And then...having hit the jackpot as far as your dental care is concerned, the professional has no more interest in you. The party is over!
So what do you do?
Nothing. Just keep your dentures clean.
So sorry!
Next patient, please!

Your Dance Time: From Jitterbug to Twitterbug!

Your Dance Time: From Jitterbug to Twitterbug!

In the 1940s a popular dance was the jitterbug. Today, among the world's most popular is the twitterbug. It can be danced by anyone. Anywhere. Anytime. No partners needed. It can turn fact into fiction, fiction into fact. It can turn honesty into dishonesty and dishonesty into honesty.
So that's dancing the twitterbug? Good God!  What have we come to? Where's our world of ideals?

New International Survey of Human Traits

New International Survey of Human Traits

I'm proposing a unique international survey of traits.
1. Do the inclinations to show-off, practice malice (for no material gain, but for the sheer joy of seeing someone embarrassed or distressed, without ever thinking: What if someone did that to me?) - and cheat tend to go together?
2. And if they do, is the combined expertise any less common in the 'highly developed' countries?
3. Will the results be funny? Slightly funny?

Or totally Un-funny?

World's Most Ignored Ideal of Human Relationships

World's Most Ignored Ideal of Human Relationships

Time again to recall the wisdom man has most ignored. The noblest souls who walked this earth have, by word and deed, endorsed the idea for man's progress to the heights of civilization. A dictum that, despite the many centuries gone, remains un-learnt. It's very simple.
DO UNTO OTHERS, AS YOU WOULD HAVE OTHERS DO UNTO YOU.
Of course, around the world, even in the most developed countries, people who are highly impressed by themselves do unto themselves what they wouldn't do for anyone else! Yup! For them: Doing good to others is such a ruddy waste of time!
